World Cup final group games and qualifiers

The World Cup is moving closer to the knockout stage, which begins this Saturday, and while some teams have already progressed to the round of 16, some of the nations have not quite stepped up to the mark.

Let’s take a look at the final round of group games and who have a chance of making it through.

Group A

Already qualified: Russia, Uruguay

What could happen?

The winner of the Russia vs Uruguay’s match takes the group. A draw would see Russia top on goal difference.

Group B

Already qualified: None

What could happen?

Incredibly Iran are through if they beat Portugal. Portugal will go through with a with either a win or a draw. Spain are through with a win or a draw over already out Morocco but can progress with a loss if Portugal win.

Group C

Already qualified: France

What could happen?

Denmark play France and a win or draw would take the Danes through, as would, a loss provided Australia don’t beat already out Peru (and get a two-goal swing). France only needs a point to be sure of top spot.

Group D

Already qualified: Croatia

What could happen?

Argentina has to beat Nigeria and cross their fingers that Croatia does not lose to Iceland. Nigeria is through with a win or even a draw if Iceland doesn’t win by a two-goal margin.

Group E

Already qualified: None

What could happen?

A win or draw against Serbia night sees Brazil slide through. The Swiss can stop Neymar and Brazil finishing top if they better Brazil’s result or win by a bigger margin to beat them on goal difference.

A draw or a loss to already out Costa Rica can take the Swiss to the knockouts, provided Serbia also lose. Serbia can still make it if they beat Brazil or draw while Switzerland is beaten by a couple of goals.

Group F

Already qualified: None

What could happen?

A draw would see Mexico through but a win over Sweden assures them top spot and three wins from three. Germany is through if they match or better Sweden’s result when they play South Korea.

The Koreans need a two-goal plus win over Germany and Sweden to lose to make an absolute miracle of a comeback. Germany and Sweden could yet be separated by their head-to-head result, which would see the holders through.

Already qualified: Belgium, England

What could happen?

England takes on Belgium with the winner taking the top spot. If it’s a draw then it will be decided by fair play as the teams are currently level on goal difference and goals scored.

Group H

Already qualified: None

What could happen?

If Japan draws with eliminated Poland they go through. Senegal v Colombia is a winner-takes-all affair but the Lions of Teranga only need a draw against the South Americans to keep their run in Russia going.
