Manchester United have made an audacious attempt to sign Toni Kroos from Real Madrid as Jose Mourinho looks to bring in a new midfielder this summer, according to a report in the Express.
Mourinho has already made two new big-money signings having bought centre-back Victor Lindelof from Benfica while striker Romelu Lukaku has arrived from Everton in a £75m deal.
However, the United boss is also thought to be in the market for a new midfielder to act as a long-term replacement for Michael Carrick – who turns 36 later this month – and the Manchester giants have been linked with a number of players in recent weeks.nho now has an ambitious target in mind as the Express are citing a report coming from Diario Gol that claims United have made a sensational attempt to sign Kroos.
The Spanish outlet suggests that the Red Devils have proposed a big-money swap deal involving the German international with David De Gea heading to Real Madrid in the opposite direction.
Speculation linking De Gea with a move to the Bernabeu has resurfaced this summer and it seems Mourinho is willing to sacrifice his No.1 in order to get his hands on Kroos – if these reports are to be believed.
Obviously, it would be devastating for United to lose De Gea but signing Kroos would certainly soften the blow as he’s developed into one of the best midfielders in the world since joining Madrid in 2014.
However, there are several problems with this proposed deal, not least United’s relationship with Madrid as it’s soured over the years following several failed transfer attempts by both clubs.
The Express suggest that Kroos is also happy at Madrid so United would struggle to lure him to Old Trafford plus they would face stiff competition if the midfielder did decide he wanted a new challenge.
That’s because the newspaper says Inter Milan and Juventus have also put forward offers for the 27-year-old so United still have several hurdles to overcome before we see Kroos wearing the famous red jersey.
