Mazarron FC Team

Mazarron’s first game in the Preferente Autonomica following promotion last season ended in a 2-0 home defeat against Sangonera. Mazarron were equal to their much fancied opponents for more than two thirds of the game but two goals in the closing stages were enough to secure the points for the visitors.

Fielding only three of the players who figured in last year’s promotion team, Mazarron took some time to settle and there was little action until the 23rd minute when Sangonera had the first shot of the game which looped over the bar.

At the other end, Enrique who was having an excellent game in midfield latched onto a loose ball and, from just outside the box, drew an outstanding save from the Sangonera keeper. Then just before the interval, Jose just failed to make contact with an excellent cross from Alfonso.

Both goalkeepers were kept busy in the early stages of the second half. Mazarron started the brighter and almost took the lead when a free kick was deflected goalwards only to be cleared off the line. Two minutes later the Sangonera keeper made an excellent save following a Mazarron corner.

On 59 minutes it was Sangonera who came close with a quick interchanging of passes only thwarted by an excellent save from Antonio, Mazarron’s new keeper. Then Palote went close for Mazarron and had two shots saved in quick succession. The game continued to flow from end to end with Sangonera being denied again by Antonio before, at the other end a Mazarron corner was headed just over the bar by Juanma.

Sangonera took the lead with just over 20 minutes remaining when Alvaro’s free kick from the edge of the penalty area took a wicked deflection and sailed over the stranded Antonio.

At this point Mazarron threw caution to the wind and the visiting keeper pulled off a number of fine saves to deny them. Mazarron’s best chance to rescue the game came in the 86th minute when a delightful free kick from the right was cleared off the line. Unfortunately, with Mazarron committed to attack they fell to the classic “sucker punch” . As the ball was cleared off the line it was hacked forward and Miguel gave the Mazarron keeper no chance to make the score 2-0.
