ANDALUCIAN SCHOOL OLYMPICS
MOJÁCAR’S REY ALABEZ TEAM COMES 2ND IN THE ANDALUCIAN SCHOOL OLYMPICS
Mojácar’s Rey Alabez Secondary School students have successfully participated in the Andalucian School Olympics, held recently in the province of Malaga. The team of youngsters returned from Carranque having finished second, only six points behind the winning team.
The Andalucia Olympic Foundation organizes an annual sports competition between all Andalucian primary and secondary schools. It is a multi – sport competition designed to instil and promote Olympic sporting values among young people.
The 2016 School Olympiad was the final phase of the event which was attended by 34 teams including 12 high schools (including Mojácar), representing all the Andalucian provinces.
The Rey Alabez team, consisted of seven students: three girls and four boys, accompanied by two teachers. With their combined efforts, they managed to climb to the second step of the podium.
The team were ranked second in the 400m, fifth in parallel jumps, third in the shot put and, top in the 4×50. They also played basketball and handball, winning in this discipline after a penalty shootout.
A total of 110 points placed the team in second place in the overall team standings, six points adrift of the winners, who scored 116. This was a very close result that affirms the quality of the Mojácar school team and endorses its position at the top of Andalucian school sport.
But the greatest things to come out of these sporting days in Carranque, Malaga are the friendly competition, effort and ambition shared whilst experiencing the values embodied in the Olympic Charter.
